The city had just awakened in the soft morning light. The surrounding shops were beginning to open one by one. Standing tall in the heart of Los Angeles was the most renowned financial institution, Liberty Trust Bank. A heavily aged man was walking slowly but steadily towards the bank’s massive glass doors.
His name was Arthur. He wore very ordinary clothes, somewhat old faded jeans, a checkered shirt, and a pair of worn-out sneakers. As he reached the bank’s grand entrance, the sharp gaze of the on-duty security guard fell upon him. The guard seemed to size the old man up from head to toe. His disdainful look silently asked, “What does a homeless-looking vagabond want here?” But Mr.
Arthur paid no attention to it. Lost in his own thoughts, he gently pushed open the heavy glass door and entered the bank. Stepping inside, his simple appearance created a strange contrast with the freezing centrally air-conditioned environment. From the bank staff to the elite American customers present, everyone stared at him as if an alien had mistakenly wandered into their royal palace.

Arthur walked slowly towards the customer service or inquiry counter. Sitting behind the counter was a woman in her 30s named Jessica. She was more preoccupied with her expensive iPhone than her actual job. An expression of unwarranted irritation and arrogance always lingered on her face.
Standing before the counter, Arthur spoke in a very polite and soft voice. “Ma’am, I need to withdraw some money from the bank.” Jessica looked up. Seeing an old man in ordinary clothes standing before her, a smile of disdain appeared on the corner of her lips. She thought to herself that he must have come to cash a meager government social security check.
In a very harsh and rough voice, [music] she replied, “Then withdraw it. What’s the point of telling me? Go and stand in line at the teller counter over there.” Arthur spoke again in a calm voice. “Ma’am, I want to withdraw the money using a check.” This time, Jessica seemed [music] even more annoyed.
Flashing a fake smile, she said mockingly, “Oh, you want to withdraw money via check? And how many dollars do you want to withdraw? 100 or 200?” “I need to withdraw $100,000 in cash, ma’am.” Arthur replied very simply. Upon hearing this, Jessica looked as if she had fallen from the sky, and the next moment she burst into loud laughter that echoed through the entire bank.
Her laughter was so piercing that the people at the surrounding counters turned their eyes toward them. Still laughing, [music] Jessica said in a sharp voice, “What did you say? $100,000? Hey, old man, did you come here to joke around this early in the morning? Have you ever looked at your homeless-like face in the mirror? Have you ever seen that much money with your own eyes? Where do all these vagabonds come from? Leave. Get out of here right now.
Don’t waste my time and the bank’s time with your nonsense.” At this extreme insult, the sexagenarian Arthur’s face turned red with shame. He said in a trembling voice, “Ma’am, why are you talking to me like this? I have an account at this bank. You could at least take my check and examine it once.” But by then, Jessica [music] had practically started shouting.
“I don’t need to look at any check. How dare you enter the most VIP bank in this city? This is not a place for low-class people like you. Only the biggest corporate clients in the city come [music] here. You don’t even have the qualifications to open an account here. Who knows which banker took pity on you and opened it.
Get out of here right now or I’ll call the guard and have you thrown out by the neck.” Arthur stood there stunned. By then, Jessica’s yelling [music] had drawn quite a crowd. Everyone stood in a circle watching the spectacle, but no one stepped forward to help the old man. Just at that moment, the bank’s branch manager, Mr.
Sterling, emerged from his luxurious glass cabin. Mr. Sterling was known through and through as extremely arrogant and a sycophant [music] to the rich. He could sense the cause of the commotion from afar. In an angry and stern voice, he asked, “What is going on here? Jessica, who is this man causing a disturbance in my bank bright and early in the morning?” Having the manager by her side made Jessica even bolder.
Relishing the moment, she said, “Mr. Sterling, just look. This homeless guy showed up out of nowhere this morning and [music] says he wants $100,000 in cash. I’m politely asking him to leave, but he won’t budge.” Mr. Sterling charged toward Arthur seething [music] with anger. “Hey, old man, are you deaf? When you’re told to get out of here, why aren’t you leaving? Is this some homeless shelter where anyone off the street can just walk in whenever they please?” Arthur said in a very pleading tone, “Sir, please believe me. I am not
homeless. I have my savings in this bank.” >> [music] >> But Sterling was devoid of all reason by then. Without listening to another word, he walked straight up and shoved Arthur hard in the chest. “I said [music] get out of here.” The push was so forceful that Arthur, weighed down by his age, couldn’t [music] keep his balance.
He was thrown back and crashed hard onto the solid floor of the bank. His checkbook slipped from his hand and fell far away. >> [music] >> He also suffered a slight blow to his head from the fall. For a few seconds, the entire bank fell dead silent. Then [music] manager Sterling roared at the security guard again.
“What are you standing there gaping at? [music] Grab this old man and drag him out of the bank right now. Where do all these nuisances come from to ruin the atmosphere?” As soon as the order was given, the guard [music] rushed over, grabbed Arthur’s arms tightly, and literally dragged him out through the bank’s massive doors in front of everyone.
>> [music] >> Arthur looked back one last time. He saw a devilish smile of victory on Jessica’s face. [music] Mr. Sterling was fixing his suit tie and walking back to his cabin in a regal manner. And the rest of the American customers in the bank went back to their business [music] as if nothing had happened.
Outside the bank, amidst the street dust and the deafening noise of cars, Arthur sat on the sidewalk. Tears of helplessness streamed down his face. He had earned this money through a lifetime of blood, sweat, backbreaking labor, and honesty. But today, he had to be humiliated like this for his own hard-earned savings.
After quite some time, he got up from there and started walking home with heavy steps. >> [music] >> Every step on the street felt like a mountain of a burden to him. Returning home, he locked the door to his room and slumped onto the floor. Then, unable to hold back his emotions any longer, >> [music] >> he burst into loud sobs.
After crying for a long time, the heavy stone in his chest lightened a bit, but the fire of humiliation was burning in his veins. He wondered, [music] “Would it be right to tell his son Alex about this? He is always so busy with work. Would it be right to worry him?” But the very next moment he thought, [music] “If he remains silent today, tomorrow they would do the same thing to 10 other innocent people.
This injustice [music] could not be accepted.” With trembling hands, he picked up his cell phone and called [music] his son Alex’s number. Alex was in New York at the time, busy with a massive international corporate deal [music] meeting. Discussions about a multi-million dollar project were underway.
He was a little surprised to suddenly see his father’s name flash on his personal phone. His father didn’t usually call at this hour. He immediately politely excused himself from the investors [music] present and stepped out of the meeting hall. He answered the call and said in his familiar confident tone, “Yes, Dad. Tell me.
Is everything okay? I was a little worried because I didn’t get your call this morning.” From the other end of the line came Arthur’s [music] wet and heavy voice. “Yes, son. Everything is fine.” To a child, even the slightest change in their father’s voice is bound to [music] be caught. Alex understood in a second that something major must have gone [music] wrong.
A frown of concern appeared on his forehead. “Dad, your voice doesn’t sound right. What happened? [music] Please tell me everything.” Hearing these words from his son, Arthur couldn’t hold himself together anymore. He [music] broke down in tears and told Alex about every moment of what had happened at the bank [music] that morning.
How he was insulted and called homeless, how the manager pushed him to the floor, and how the guard dragged him out onto the street by the neck. Hearing all this, Alex’s blood began to boil. Every sound of his father’s crying [music] pierced Alex’s heart like a knife. He clenched his jaw and tried to keep himself calm. “Dad, please calm down. Please don’t cry anymore.
I’m coming right now.” “No, son.” Arthur quickly interjected. “You attend your meeting. I am fine. I just called you to lighten the pain in my heart.” “No.” There was a cold determination in Alex’s voice that no one had the power to disobey. “No meeting in the world, no million-dollar deal can be bigger [music] than my father’s respect.
I’m booking the first flight and coming back to Los Angeles right now. [music] You just lock your door and rest. I will handle what needs to be done now.” Hanging up the phone, Alex went straight back into the meeting room. With folded hands, he apologized to everyone present and informed them that he had to leave immediately due to [music] an extreme family emergency.
Without listening to a word from anyone, he walked out. He instructed his assistant to arrange the first flight to LA and headed straight for JFK Airport. Throughout the entire journey, only his father’s humiliated, tearful face and the faces of those arrogant bank employees flashed before his eyes. Alex made a solemn vow to himself.
He wouldn’t just punish those people, he would teach them a severe lesson they would never forget [music] in their lives and he would deliver this lesson in complete silence but with his overwhelming power. [music] Late that night when Alex reached home, he saw that Arthur had fallen asleep sitting on the couch in the living room.
The mark of extreme exhaustion and humiliation was still evident on his wrinkled [music] face. Alex very carefully placed a hand on his father’s shoulder. Startled, Arthur opened his eyes. >> [music] >> Seeing his son before him, his eyes filled with tears again. Alex hugged his father tightly. “That’s enough, Dad.
>> [music] >> No more crying. You go to sleep now. Tomorrow morning we will both go to that bank together.” [music] Arthur exclaimed in panic, “No, son. We have no need to go to that hell again. I will never set foot in that bank for the rest of my life.” Taking both his father’s hands in his own, Alex said in a calm but sharp tone, “We have to go, Dad.
This isn’t just about avenging your insult. It’s a fight to grind their sky-high arrogance into the dirt. [music] We have to go so that in the future they never dare to treat anyone else’s father so inhumanely. And yes, [music] we will go exactly the way you went this morning in completely ordinary clothes.” Looking into his son’s eyes and seeing his ironclad resolve, Arthur raised no further objections.
[music] He remained silent. The next morning, Alex set aside his expensive Armani suit and pulled out a very ordinary t-shirt and cheap [music] pants from the closet. He slipped on a pair of simple sandals. He also gave his luxury car driver the day off. Leaving the house, the father and son called a regular yellow cab and set off for that Liberty Trust Bank.
The atmosphere inside the bank was exactly the same today. The bright lights, the smell of expensive perfume and the crowd of elite customers. When Alex and Arthur entered the bank, the [music] bank staff began to look at them with looks of disgust just like yesterday. Alex gripped his father’s hand tightly as if silently giving him courage.
They went straight and stood in [music] front of Jessica’s inquiry counter. Jessica was engrossed in her phone as usual today. Alex said in a very polite voice, [music] “Madam, we need to withdraw some money from the bank.” Hearing the voice, Jessica looked up. Seeing the humiliated old man from yesterday, she smiled mockingly.
“Oh my, I see you’ve shown up again. Did you bring your son along with you today to complain? Keep your ears open and listen. No one here will listen to your [music] complaints. Hit the road quietly.” Alex smiled a little. “Madam, we are not here to make any complaints. [music] We are just here to withdraw money. Here is my father’s check. Please process it.
” Jessica took the check with extreme irritation. Looking at the check amount, she burst into loud laughter again just like [music] yesterday. “Yesterday the old father was joking, today the son has started too. $100,000. Where would you people get that much money? [music] Go deposit $100 in your own accounts first.
” Hearing her words, the people around started laughing again. Arthur’s face turned dark with humiliation, [music] but Alex was as calm as a stone. He said in an unwavering voice, “Madam, instead of talking unnecessarily, just type the account number into the computer once and check the balance. All your misconceptions will be shattered in an instant.
” [music] Jessica threw the check outside the counter and said, “I don’t have a single second to waste on street [music] vagabonds like you. If you are so eager, go and talk to the branch manager, Mr. Sterling, [music] sitting inside. He will give you the real accounting.” Jessica thought to herself that manager Sterling would throw this boy out by the neck today just like he did yesterday.
Alex said in a very calm voice, [music] “All right then, we will meet with your manager.” Saying this, he took his father and walked toward the manager’s cabin. The assistant sitting outside the cabin door blocked their path. >> [music] >> “Where are you going? Mr. Sterling is very busy right now.” Alex said, “We have urgent [music] business with him. We need to see him.
” The assistant glared and said, “There’s no urgent business here. Go sit quietly in the corner of that waiting area over there. When he has time, I will call you.” Alex didn’t protest [music] and went to sit in the designated corner with his father. He keenly observed that people in expensive suits and pants were easily going in and out of the manager’s room without any appointments and no one was stopping them.
Before long, half an hour [music] passed. An hour went by. Manager Sterling came out of his cabin several times, smiled and talked to VIP [music] customers showing his teeth, but didn’t even glance once towards Alex and his father sitting in that corner. Arthur now truly became restless. “Let’s go back from here, son.
I can’t [music] bear this insult anymore.” Alex gently pressed his father’s hand and whispered, “Just [music] 5 more minutes, Dad. Then all scores will be settled.” After exactly 1 hour of waiting, Alex stood up from his seat. There was no longer that polite smile on his face. His face now held a terrifying, cold hardness.
Completely ignoring the assistant’s attempts to stop him, he went straight to Mr. Sterling’s cabin, pushed the door open violently and stepped inside. Mr. Sterling was on the phone laughing and talking to [music] someone. Seeing someone enter the room without permission like this, he exploded in anger.
He shouted, “I see you have no common sense at all. Whose permission did you get to come inside?” Alex walked straight ahead and stood face-to-face right in front of Sterling’s desk. [music] Arthur also came and stood behind his son with some fear and hesitation. Alex asked in his deep and ice-cold [music] voice, “Are you Mr. Sterling, the manager of this branch?” “Yes, I am Sterling, but who are you and how dare you enter my cabin without permission? Security! Hey, security!” Sterling yelled at the top of his lungs.
“There is no need to yell [music] for security, Mr. Sterling. They won’t be able to save you today.” There was such authority and confidence in Alex’s tone that Sterling seemed to freeze for a moment. He was starting to get a little scared now. “What are you trying to say? What do you want here?” Sterling asked unnerved.
Alex took out that $100,000 check from his pocket [music] and threw it right in the middle of Sterling’s desk. “I want you to complete this check transaction right now. This is my father, Mr. Arthur Pendleton’s check. Yesterday you refused to recognize him.” Sterling looked at the check, [music] then at Arthur’s face.
Understanding the situation, his temper flared up again. “Oh, so this is that old man from yesterday. Listen here, boy, have you two lost your minds? When there are zero dollars in the account, where am I supposed to make the transaction from? Every day useless people like you show up from nowhere to waste time. Looking at your faces, it’s clear what your worth is.
” Saying this, [music] Sterling pushed the check away with his finger. “Now quietly get lost from here, father and son, otherwise I’ll call 911, get the police and arrange for both of you to eat jail food.” A strange smile now appeared on Alex’s face. “Experience, qualifications, judging people by their appearance, it is exactly this arrogance of yours that dragged me all the way here, Mr. Sterling.
While speaking, Alex took his iPhone from his pocket and dialed a number. Yes, Marcus. Are you and your entire team right outside the bank? Very good. Come inside now. And yes, [music] get the regional head, Mr. Thompson, and our compliance department on a conference call immediately.
They need to hear live what is going on inside the bank today.” Sterling couldn’t understand [music] anything. “What kind of nonsense are you babbling?” No sooner had he finished speaking than the cabin door opened. About six highly professional men wearing black suits and ties rushed inside. One of them stepped forward and very respectfully handed a leather folded file into Alex’s hands.
Seeing these men, Sterling’s [music] throat went bone dry. Alex now pulled up a chair and sat looking directly into Sterling’s eyes. >> [music] >> His tone of voice had completely changed. That voice now held the authority of a supremely powerful owner. “My name is [music] Alex, Mr. Sterling. And this man standing behind me, whom you shoved and threw onto the street yesterday calling him homeless, is my father, Mr. Arthur.
And I, Alex, am the majority shareholder and chairman of the board of directors of your Liberty Trust Bank. >> [music] >> In simple words, the chair you were sitting in showing so much arrogance and [music] the corporate bank you work for, my father and I own all of it.” In an instant, a graveyard-like silence descended upon the entire cabin.
Upon hearing this, the ground seemed to slip from under manager Sterling’s feet. His eyes widened in terror. His mouth fell open. Even in the AC, beads of sweat began to form on his forehead. [music] He couldn’t believe his own ears. From outside the cabin’s glass walls, [music] Jessica, sitting at the counter, also started trembling violently upon seeing the scene.
The eyes of all the staff and customers in the entire bank [music] were now locked solely on the cabin. Sterling stammered in a trembling voice, “S- sir, y- you you must be joking.” Alex’s voice now roared like thunder. “Joking? You and your staff were the ones joking with my father yesterday when you [music] insulted him by calling him a vagabond, when you shoved a 60-year-old man to the ground, when the whole world stood watching the spectacle and you were laughing.
[music] Alex gestured to a member of his team. The man immediately opened a laptop, placed it on Sterling’s desk, and played [music] yesterday’s CCTV footage. Every moment was crystal clear on the screen. Jessica’s ugly smirk, Sterling’s shove, the guard dragging him out, everything. Within a few minutes, this footage will reach our New York head office and all the national news channels in the country. Mr.
Sterling, the termination letters for all of you, meaning your letters of dismissal from your jobs, are already ready in my hands. Sterling now almost [music] burst into tears. He slumped out of his chair and threw himself directly at Arthur’s feet. “Sir, please forgive me, sir. I have made a huge mistake. I was blind. I couldn’t recognize you. I am an ass.
I am a beast. Please don’t end my career, sir. I have two small children at home. I have to pay off their mortgage. I will be out on the streets.” Arthur’s soft heart melted seeing this scene. He looked at his son Alex [music] with somewhat pitiful eyes, but there was no forgiveness or mercy in Alex’s eyes today. He grabbed Sterling’s collar and [music] pulled him up to his feet.
“When you were shoving my elderly father to the ground, didn’t you remember your own children even once? And what are you asking forgiveness for? [music] This apology after finding out the true identities of my father and me? Or for the daily humiliation you inflict on every poor and ordinary American citizen who comes to your bank? There is no forgiveness for an [music] arrogant man like you.
” Alex turned around and signaled for Jessica, who was outside, to come in. Crying and trembling, [music] Jessica entered the cabin. Looking at her, Alex said in a sharp tone, “Madam, you measure a person’s worth by their face [music] and clothes. Now tell me, looking at my appearance today, what do you think? How much is my worth?” Not a single word came out of [music] Jessica’s mouth.
She just hung her head and sobbed. Alex now [music] looked at both of them and delivered his final verdict. “I am not firing you two just because you insulted my father. You are being fired because you are not fit to sit in these chairs. A bank’s job is not just to transact people’s dollars. [music] A bank’s true job is to serve people with respect and care.
Through your despicable behavior, you have ground [music] this bank’s name, reputation, and people’s trust into the dirt.” Alex looked at his chief of staff and ordered, “Hand over the termination letters to these two immediately, and the security guard along with them. >> [music] >> I will not tolerate such inhumane people in my corporation for a single second.
” After that, Alex stepped out of the cabin and looked at all the bank staff gathered outside. His deep voice boomed through the entire bank. >> [music] >> “What happened here today is a severe lesson for all of you. A person’s true value lies not in their expensive [music] branded clothes, but in their character and values.
A customer, whether they come in wearing a simple T-shirt or an expensive business [music] suit, is the lifeblood of the institution. From today on, if I hear even the slightest complaint of bad behavior towards any customer in this branch, not only will jobs be lost, but I will also take strict legal action against them.
” Pin-drop silence reigned in the entire bank. Everyone was too scared to even breathe loudly. Finally, Alex returned to his father. He placed a hand on his father’s shoulder with ultimate affection. Arthur looked at Sterling one last time. Then he said in a very calm and profound voice, “Son, we [music] founded this bank to stand by ordinary people in their times of trouble, not to insult and drive them away.
Always remember, the dollars and wealth of Wall Street are here today. They might not be tomorrow, but a person’s humanity, behavior, and manners live on as their identity for [music] a lifetime.” Saying these words, Arthur held his son’s hand and walked out through the bank’s main doors [music] with his head held high. No one was mocking him today.
Instead, all the bank staff and customers present stood on both sides with their heads bowed in deep respect, making [music] way for them. Standing outside the bank under the open sky of Los Angeles, Arthur took a deep breath. Today, tears were rolling down his eyes once again. However, these were not tears of humiliation like yesterday, but rather [music] the tears of a father’s ultimate pride.
Today, he was immensely proud of his son, who not only restored his father’s lost honor, but also taught a severe lesson to an entire system blinded [music] by the arrogance of power.
